Choosing My Horror Sub-genre - Folk Horror

Now that I have analysed the horror genre and its sub-genres in detail, I have decided that I am going to create the opening scene for a film from the folk horror sub-genre.

The narrative's of folk horror often include cults, sacrificial rituals and characters frequently include an outsider entering an isolated community that does not follow the rules and social expectations of society, and have instead perhaps created their own community and 'religion' in isolation (reinforced by isolated settings).

Often the plot of the film builds to a very sinister event or ritual, one which frequently involves human sacrifice.

The sub-genre has very specific iconography of paganism, the maypole, flowers and ancient nature, mysterious symbols and animals being revered as spiritual entities.

Good examples of films from the folk horror sub-genre include:

'The Wicker Man'

'The Witch'

'Enys Men'

'Starve Acre'

'A Field in England'

'The Blair Witch Project'

'Witchfinder General'

'Kill List'

'The Ritual'

'Midsommar'

'Lamb'

'Apostle'
