Analysing Opening Sequences and Enigma - Introduction

During my analysis of a number of opening sequences I also found that in some the main purpose seemed to be to create a sense of enigma or mystery for the audience, purposefully withholding information to create interest for the spectator.

This purpose, of creating enigma or mystery, is most common in opening scenes from horror or thriller films, used as a means of hooking the audience and instantly creating tension, suspense and anticipation. Often, directors create enigma by showing events out of chronological order, through withholding narrative information and by refusing to introduce and establish characters. Typically, though not always, this is achieved through the use of low-key lighting and tense non-diegetic music. As I am considering creating an opening sequence for a horror or thriller film I have decided to look in more detail at two opening sequences (from films from different genres) that focus on creating enigma. I will discuss how mystery is created through the use of certain techniques.

The two opening sequences I have decided to look at are from the films 'Inception' and 'The Usual Suspects'.
