Analysing Opening Sequences and Characters - Introduction

I've analysed a number of opening sequences and I have found that frequently the purpose is to establish character by introducing character traits to the audience. Often, but not exclusively, these characters are the films' central protagonists.

Because it is so common for opening scenes to introduce important characters to the audience I have decided to look in more detail at two opening sequences (from films from different genres) that focus on establishing characters and their traits for the audience. I will discuss how these characters are presented and what meaning this presentation creates for the audience.

The two opening sequences I have decided to look at are from the films 'Hot Fuzz' and 'Trainspotting'.
