Analysing Opening Scenes 1 - 'Interstellar'

The first opening sequence I am going to analyse comes from the science fiction film 'Interstellar' directed by Christopher Nolan. 

The opening scene contains the following typical conventions:

• Production company logos/idents at the start of the scene (Warner Bros, Paramount, Legendary Pictures, Syncopy)
• Introduces setting - the bookcase with lots of dust to establish the state of the environment in the film 
• Titles - including the name of the film ‘Interstellar’ 
• Introduces character - starting with the elderly woman reminiscing on her life, but also introducing the film's central protagonist and his character traits 
• Introduces genre - by showing the spaceship (sci-fi)
• Creates enigma with mystery surrounding the spaceship
