Analysing Opening Scenes - Conclusion

Having looked at a number of opening sequences from different genres I can see that there are certain conventions that always, or frequently, appear in opening sequences, including:

Production Company Logos/Idents (usually at the start before the action begins)

Titles or Title Cards (including the names of production companies, actors, director, crew and the name of the film)

Introduces Character/Character Traits

Introduces Setting/Location

Indicates Genre (through recognisable iconography, music and font)

Creates Enigma/Mystery

Now that I have identified and understand the conventions and purposes of opening scenes, and I am aware that the majority of these conventions resurface in most opening sequences, I will make sure to incorporate these tropes in the opening scene I create to ensure a more authentic look for my opening scene.

Having identified the three main purposes of opening scenes, I will now look more closely at the ways that opening sequences introduce character, introduce setting and create enigma.
